SOLID WASTE EXEMPT POLICY
Households whose sole source of income is social security benefits may seek an exemption from the payment of solid waste collection fees from the county by submitting a request and proof of income to the Solid Waste Department officer. The applicants shall verify income through a notarized and sworn statement, and attach any relevant supporting documents. The Solid Waste officer will review the application for the exemption. The exemption shall apply only so long as the household’s sole source of income is social security. It shall be requested each year beginning November 1st and received no later than December 31st of each year. NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER DECEMBER 1ST OF THE CURRENT YEAR, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW except for someone becoming retired or disabled during that current year. In accordance with the Code of Ala. 1975, Section 22-27-3(a)(2) and (3).
You must fill out an application every year to be exempt from the service, or your name will come off the exemption list, you will have to resume paying for trash service, and you will have to wait another year to reapply. APPLICATIONS WILL BEGIN BEING ACCEPTED ON OCTOBER 15TH OF EACH CURRENT YEAR.
**To qualify for this exemption, your sole income for your household must be from Social Security only. You cannot be drawing any kind of retirement, unemployment, or pension, and no one in the home is working, including a child, drawing any kind of retirement, unemployment, or pension.
**If any statement is found to be false, the applicant will be liable for the payment of past services rendered, and this exemption will be voided. By applying, you understand that deliberate misrepresentation may subject you to civil or criminal prosecution.
There will be an exempt Social Security sole source income sticker placed on each household container with an exempt account. Removing the sticker will remove you from being exempt.
